My Plate Food Icon

We all know that what we eat matters. The USDA launched a new food icon to serve as s reminder to make healthier food choices. The new MyPlate icon emphasizes the fruit, vegetable, grains, protein and dairy food groups.  Information about building a healthier plate at mealtimes can be found at www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans form the basis of the federal government's nutrition education programs and dietary advice provided by health and nutrition professionals. 

The Guidelines include:

Balance Calories (enjoy your food, but eat less, avoid oversized portions)

Foods to Increase  (make half your plate fruits and vegetables, use low-fat milk, make at least half of your grains whole grains)

Foods to Reduce  (choose foods lower in sodium, drink water instead of sugary drinks).
